Fragment A: Start With the Insight, Not the Data
Most presenters open a data slide by describing what the audience can already see: "This chart shows our revenue over the last four quarters." A stronger approach flips the order — lead with the insight the data proves, then show the numbers as evidence. "We've grown faster than any competitor this year — here's the data." This small change shifts the audience from passive observers trying to decode a chart to active listeners who already understand why the numbers matter.
Fragment B: One Number, One Message
The most memorable data presentations often centre on a single, well-chosen statistic. Instead of showing a table of twelve figures, ask: which one number, if the audience remembered nothing else, would make the strongest argument? Surround that number with context — what it compares to, why it changed, what it means for the future — and let the rest of the data support it rather than compete with it. Simplicity is not a compromise; it is the strategy.
Fragment C: Choose the Chart for the Message
Every chart type answers a different question. Bar charts compare categories. Line charts show change over time. Pie charts show proportions of a whole — but only work clearly with three or four segments at most. Scatter plots reveal relationships between two variables. The mistake most presenters make is choosing a chart because it looks interesting, rather than because it answers the question they are trying to answer. When in doubt, a simple bar chart almost always communicates faster than anything more complex.

Abstract numbers are hard to remember. Numbers attached to something real are not. "We lost €2 million" is forgettable. "We lost the equivalent of twenty full-time employees for a year" is not. Translating a figure into a human-scale equivalent — time, people, physical objects, everyday costs — helps audiences feel the weight of the data rather than just read it. This technique works especially well when presenting to non-financial stakeholders who need to understand the impact, not the mechanics.

Why Most Business Presentations Fail to Persuade — Even With Good Data
A study by researchers at Stanford University found that stories are up to 22 times more memorable than facts alone. Yet in most business environments, the opposite approach dominates: slides packed with figures, tables, and percentages, with little explanation of what the numbers actually mean or why the audience should care. The problem isn't the data itself. It's the order in which it's presented. Most presenters begin with the numbers and hope the audience will draw the right conclusion. Effective data communicators do the opposite: they begin with the conclusion, then use the data as proof. A second common failure is the lack of comparison. A figure on its own — "our NPS score is 42" — carries almost no information until the audience knows what 42 means relative to something: the industry average, last year's score, or a competitor's result. Without a benchmark, even a strong result can feel meaningless. The final failure is visual overload. Research from the Wharton School of Business found that audiences remember only about 10% of what they hear in a presentation — but that figure rises to 65% when information is paired with a single, relevant visual. The problem is that most data slides contain five to eight visuals competing for the audience's attention at once.
