Lesson
A2ENNew in Town: What Can You Do Here?
Practise can and can't, to + verb for purpose (I went to the chemist's to buy medicine) and places in the city through life in a new town. Sofia just moved to a small town and tells her mum what she can and can't do there — then play a TV game where three real locals and one fake local recommend places in Millbrook. Who has never been there? A practical A2 English lesson on can/can't, city places and describing your neighbourhood. Ideal for adult learners, English tutors, and language schools.

Content Block. A Message From Sofia

Hi Mum! I'm in my new flat in Riverside! It's a small town, but you can find everything here. There's a supermarket next to my house, so I can do the shopping every day. The chemist's is near the station — I went there yesterday to buy some medicine for my cold. There's a cash machine in front of it, too. The park near my house is very quiet, so I can run there every morning. But the shopping centre is really crowded at the weekend, and the cafés there are expensive. There are two problems: you can't swim here because there's no swimming pool, and you can't buy anything after 9 pm — all the shops close! But the people are friendly, and the town is clean and beautiful. Come and visit me soon! Love, Sofia

Hidden Role. Secret Tourist: Who Isn’t a Local?
Hidden Role
Scenario
Welcome to the TV show "Secret Tourist"! Today we're in Millbrook, a small town. Four people say they live here. But one of them is a tourist who has never lived in Millbrook — they read an old guidebook and pretend to be a local! Round 1: Everyone recommends 3 places in Millbrook. Say what you can do there and describe them: quiet, cheap, crowded, popular... Round 2: Ask each other questions. Real locals know the town — a fake doesn't. Useful questions: Where can I watch a film? Where can I buy cheap food? When is the market? Where can I work with free Wi-Fi? Is it quiet or crowded? Why do people go there? At the end, everyone votes: who is the Secret Tourist?
Jess
SpyYou say you live in Millbrook.
Secret goal: You are NOT a local — you only read an old guidebook from ten years ago. You believe: 1) Millbrook Cinema on Main Street is a great place to watch films on Friday evening. 2) The market is on Sundays in the town square. 3) You can't find free Wi-Fi anywhere in Millbrook. Recommend these places with confidence! Your strategy: attack first! Say Omar is the fake: "His café isn't in Millbrook — it's in the next town!"
Must use: Use language: You can... / You can't... / People go there to... / It's very quiet / cheap / popular.
Kate
You work at the post office in Millbrook. You love the town.
Secret goal: Your local knowledge: 1) The old cinema closed two years ago — now it's a big shopping centre. You can't watch films in Millbrook; people go to the next town for that. 2) The market is on Saturdays, near the river. It's cheap but very crowded. Ask everyone where they watch films and when they go to the market.
Omar
You have a small café near the river in Millbrook.
Secret goal: Your local knowledge: 1) The cheapest lunch in town is at the Saturday market by the river. 2) The library is very quiet and has free Wi-Fi — a lot of people work there. 3) The old cinema is a shopping centre now. Ask everyone where they can work or study in Millbrook.
Grandpa Tom
You are 78 and you lived in Millbrook all your life.
Secret goal: Your local knowledge: 1) Three years ago, the market moved from the town square to the river — and now it's on Saturdays, not Sundays. 2) The library has free Wi-Fi — your grandson uses it every day. Ask everyone about the market. If someone says something old or wrong, ask: "Really? When did you last go there?"
